Etymology: < German Pyrophanit (A. Hamberg 1890, in Geol. Föreningens i Stockholm Förhandl. 12 598) < pyro- pyro- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕανός bright (see phanopoeia n.) + German -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

An oxide mineral containing manganese and titanium, typically occurring as small, deep red, black, or greenish-yellow crystals or grains, especially in association with manganese ores in metamorphic rocks.Pyrophanite is a manganese titanate, MnTiO₃, usually also containing some iron and forming a series with ilmenite. Crystal system: trigonal.
