Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyrōpus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pyrōpus a red gem, an alloy of gold and bronze < ancient Greek πυρωπός fiery-eyed, fiery < πυρο- pyro- comb. form + ὤψ eye, face (see -ops comb. form). In sense 2 after German Pyrop ( A. G. Werner 1800 , in C. F. Ludwig Handb. der Mineralogie (1803) I. 48). Compare Middle French, French pyrope (1552; earlier in Old French in apparently isolated use as pirope (1258)).
1. Any red or fiery gem, such as a ruby or carbuncle. In later use poetic. Now rare.
