Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < either German Qualle jellyfish (16th cent.; < quellen to swell, to become inflated: see quell v.2) or Dutch kwal jellyfish (early 18th cent.; < kwellen to swell, to become inflated: see quell v.2).
U.S. Obsolete.
A jellyfish.In quot. 1873: perhaps by confusion, an octopus.

Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: quarrel n.1
Etymology: Originally a variant of quarrel n.1 (compare forms at that entry), with elision of the unstressed vowel in the second syllable, now distinguished in form in the senses below.
Originally: a large brick or tile, esp. a curved firebrick. Now spec.: a refractory channel in the wall of a furnace, boiler, etc., through which the flame of a burner passes.
