Etymology: < Dutch kardeel, kwarteel, †quardeel (also 17th cent. as †quarteel , †quartel ) particular measure for dry or wet goods, cask of this capacity (late 15th cent. in Middle Dutch), large cask used for whale oil or blubber, or a caskful of this (1st half of the 17th cent.) < Middle French quartel , cartel cask or barrel (1st half of the 14th cent.), perhaps < post-classical Latin quartallus , quartellus , cartellus vessel (perhaps a cask or barrel) that contains a quarter of a standard measure (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources), dry measure (12th cent.), apparently a conflation of quartellus fourth part, quarter ( < classical Latin quartus fourth (see quart n.2) + -ellus , diminutive suffix: see -el suffix2) and cartallus (also cartellus , quartallum , quartellum ) basket (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek κάρταλλος basket, a technical term perhaps related to κυρτός bulging, convex (see kurtosis n.).Compare also post-classical Latin quartale (neuter; also quartalis , cartalis , masculine) fourth part, dry measure (11th cent.; early 15th cent. in a British source), liquid measure (14th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin quartus + -ālis -al suffix1.
Now historical.
A large cask used to hold fat or oil from the carcasses of whales, seals, etc.; (also) a measure equivalent to the capacity of such a cask, varying over time and according to locality.Often equated to a hogshead (approx. 63 wine gallons (238 litres)); in later use sometimes referring to a larger capacity (approx. 77 to 90 imperial gallons (350-409 litres)).
