Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quantum valebat.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin quantum valebat as much as it was worth (6th cent. or earlier) < classical Latin quantum which amount (see quantum n.) + valēbat , 3rd singular imperfect indicative of valēre to be worth (see valent adj.). Compare quantum valebant n. and earlier quantum meruit n.
Law. Now chiefly historical.
