Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyrola.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyrola (from 1517 in glossaries, later adopted in scientific Latin as genus name Pyrola (Linnaeus 1753: see note at definition)) < pyrus pear tree (see pyrus n.) + classical Latin -ola -ola suffix¹, so called from the resemblance of the leaves to those of the pear tree. Compare Middle French, French pirole (1567).
