Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyrola.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyrola (from 1517 in glossaries, later adopted in scientific Latin as genus name Pyrola (Linnaeus 1753: see note at definition)) < pyrus pear tree (see pyrus n.) + classical Latin -ola -ola suffix1, so called from the resemblance of the leaves to those of the pear tree. Compare Middle French, French pirole (1567).
Any of several small evergreen woodland plants of the genus Pyrola (family Ericaceae), of north temperate regions, having rounded leaves and spikes of drooping, bell-shaped white or greenish flowers; also called wintergreen. Also (in form Pyrola): the genus itself.The genus is sometimes placed in its own family, Pyrolaceae, and it formerly contained some plants that are now placed in separate genera, as Chimaphila and Moneses.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 396.
