pyroclastic flow n. a mass of ash or other loose, solid material which travels down the flanks of a volcano and along the ground during an eruption; esp. a dense cloud of ash, pumice, rock fragments, and volcanic gases which is expelled at high temperature from a volcano and subsequently travels at great speed close to the ground (cf. nuée ardente n.).
