Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. It is unclear whether the α. forms or the β. forms show the original form of the word, although the β. forms would more readily be explained as showing remodelling (after words in -en suffix5) of the α. forms than vice versa. Perhaps compare quease v.1A variant squezzen is also recorded in the 19th cent.:1823 E. Moor Suffolk Words 301 As we sometimes say squench for quench, so we say squezzen for quezzen; particularly in regard to personal suffocation or strangulation.
Obsolete (English regional (East Anglian) in later use).
