Etymology: < Italian quattrocento the fifteenth century (a1799; earlier in sense ‘the year 1400’ (1586)), use as noun of quattrocento four hundred (here short for mille quattrocento fourteen hundred) < quattro (see quatre n.) + cento (see cent n.1). Compare earlier cinquecento n., trecento n., and quattrocentist n.Not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (kwattroˌtʃe·nto) /kwattroˈtʃɛnto/.
