One of the three forms of vitamin B6 (see pyridoxine n.), which is a coenzyme in a number of metabolic processes, notably transamination.Pyridoxal is derived from pyridoxine by oxidation of the 4-hydroxymethyl group to an aldehyde, and usually occurs in mammalian tissues as the phosphate ester.
