Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyrexia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyrexia (1764 or earlier), probably < ancient Greek πυρεκ- , stem of πυρέσσειν to be feverish (see pyrectic adj.) + -σία (see -sy suffix1), after post-classical Latin apyrexia (1672 or earlier: see apyrexy n.). Compare French pyrexie (1795).
