Etymology: < ancient Greek πυρήν fruit-stone (see pyrene n.¹) + -o- connective + -carp comb. form. In sense 2 after German Pyrenocarpien, plural (1884 in the passage translated in quot. 1887 at sense 2). With sense 2 compare earlier pyrenocarpous adj.
