Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyreum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyreum altar of fire in the religion of the ancient Persians (6th cent.) < ancient Greek πυρεῖον (usually in plural) firesticks, kindling, in Hellenistic Greek also pan for coals < πῦρ fire (see pyro- comb. form) + -εῖον, suffix forming nouns. Compare French pyrée (1702).
Obsolete. rare.
