Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin pyrecticus; Greek πυρεκτικός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyrecticus (1785 or earlier) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek πυρεκτικός feverish < ancient Greek πυρεκ- , stem of πυρέσσειν to be feverish ( < πυρετός fever: see pyreto- comb. form) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs. Compare earlier pyrexia n. and later pyretic adj.
