Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pyrausta.
Etymology: < classical Latin pyrausta (Pliny, although the reading is disputed; given as equivalent to pyrallis pyralis n.) < ancient Greek πυραύστης moth that gets singed in the flame < πῦρ fire (see pyro- comb. form) + αὔειν to light a fire (see austere adj.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns. Compare Middle French, French †pyrauste, †French pirauste (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny).The classical Latin word was later adopted into scientific Latin as Pyrausta, name of a genus of pyralid moths (F. von P. Schrank Fauna Boica (1802) II. ii.163)).
Obsolete.
A (mythical) insect supposed to live in fire. Cf. pyralis n. 1. Also figurative.
