Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin qui tam.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin qui tam, the first words of the clause qui tam pro domino rege quam pro se ipso sequitur ‘who sues as well for the lord the king as for himself’ (1684 or earlier in a British source; implied earlier in an allusion in a British source (1433)) < classical Latin quī who (see who pron.) + tam so much, to such a degree (see tanquam n.).With the extended use of the noun (as e.g. in quot. 1694 at sense A.) compare quot. 1688 at sense A. and also an earlier description of a corrupt lawyer as one whose declarations all contain Qui tam pro Domino Rege ( T. Jordan Pictures of Passions, Fancies, & Affections (1641) sig. D6).

A civil action brought under a criminal statute which allows a private individual to sue for a penalty both personally and on behalf of the Crown (government, or a specified public institution).
