Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Querflöte.
Etymology: < German Querflöte transverse flute (16th cent.), organ stop emitting the sound of a flute (1712 or earlier) < quer transverse (see thwart adv.) + Flöte flute, recorder (see flute n.1). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (kvę̄·ɹflötə) /ˈkvɛːfløtə/.
Music. historical.
1. A transverse flute, blown through an opening at the side; = cross-flute n. at cross- comb. form 2.The term is used chiefly to distinguish the more recent transverse flute from the older recorder-like flute (German Blockflöte).
