Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin querelat- , querelare , -ory suffix2.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin querelat-, past participial stem of querelare to complain (5th cent. as querelari ), to set up a claim or bring a legal action against a person (9th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources; < classical Latin querēla complaint, grievance: see quarrel n.2) + -ory suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin querelator plaintiff (1219 in a British source).
Obsolete. rare.
Of the nature of a complaint.In quot. 1553 appellatory and querelatory designate two separate elements in the libel: one appealing against a prior judgment, the other in the nature of a new complaint.
