Etymology: < the name of the Bight of Benin, < the name of the Benin Empire (1440–1897) (situated in what is now southern Nigeria).The kingdom of Benin was, from the 17th to the late 19th cent., under the rule of Dahomey, and from 1892–1960 was a colony of France, known as French Dahomey. In 1975, during the rule of a dictatorship (1972–90), the country became the People's Republic of Benin. In 1991 it became the Republic of Benin.
