Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Middle Dutch quelen to suffer, Old Saxon quelan to suffer torture, to die (Middle Low German quēlen to suffer, to be ill), Old High German quelen to suffer (Middle High German queln ) < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian gélti to sting, to be painful, Early Irish -bail (in at-bail to die). Compare quale n.1, quell v.1In Old English a strong verb of Class IV; distinctively strong inflections survive into Middle English. In the Old English form cwellan (chiefly attested in late sources) probably influenced by Old English cwellan quell v.1 In Old English the prefixed forms acwelan (compare a- prefix1 ), becwelan (compare be- prefix), oþcwelan (compare oth prep. and conj.), all in sense ‘to die’, are also attested.
