Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: quantify v., -fication suffix.
Etymology: < quantify v.: see -fication suffix. Compare post-classical Latin quantificatio action of measuring, measurement (14th cent. in British sources).
1. Logic. In traditional Logic: the ascription of universal or particular quantity (see quantity n. 9) to a proposition, or, more usually, a term (originally in quantification of the predicate). In modern Logic, Mathematics, and Linguistics: the use of a quantifier (see quantifier n. 1a) to indicate the scope of a variable, etc.The phrase quantification of the predicate is not used in G. Bentham Outline of a New System of Logic (1827), even though the concept is attributed to Bentham in several later sources.
