Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin puorrhoea, pyorrhoea.
Etymology: < scientific Latin puorrhoea (1764 or earlier; also pyorrhoea (1781 or earlier)) < Hellenistic Greek πυόρροια < ancient Greek πυο- pyo- comb. form + -ρροια -rrhoea comb. form. Compare French puorrhée (1790 or earlier), pyorrhée (1802 or earlier).
Medicine.
The discharge of pus; an instance of this; esp. (more fully pyorrhoea alveolaris) a severe form of periodontal disease accompanied by such discharge.Now rare in technical use.
