Etymology: < French quatorze fourteenth day of the month (1676), set of four cards at Piquet scoring fourteen points (1690), use as noun of quatorze fourteen (12th cent. in Old French) < classical Latin quattuordecim fourteen (in post-classical Latin also quatuordecim ) < quattuor four (see quatuor n.) + decem ten (see decem- comb. form).In sense 2 short for Quatorze Juillet n.
