Etymology: < Middle French, French quatorzaine set of fourteen, especially with reference to days (13th cent. in Old French as quatorzieine ; also in Middle French in sense ‘the number fourteen’) < quatorze quatorze n. + -aine , suffix forming nouns from numerals (probably < classical Latin -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives: see nonagenarian n. and adj.). Compare Old Occitan catorzena period of fourteen days, fortnight (1463). Compare quatrain n., quintain n.²Not found in dictionaries of French denoting a piece of verse.
