Etymology: Alteration of carfax n. after Middle French quatre (see quatre n.); in α. forms with second element apparently after Middle French fois time (although compare Carfoix , variant of carfax n.); in β. forms with second element after voie voye n.Popular etymologies of carfax n. as derived from French quatre are found from the 17th cent.; in the 18th cent. the theory was current that the place name Carfax in Oxford was originally Quatervois, literally ‘four ways’.
