Etymology: < Middle French quaternité set of four (13th cent. in Old French), dogma stating that four persons comprise the Christian Godhead (1553 or earlier) and its etymon post-classical Latin quaternitas group of four aspects of the Christian Godhead (4th or 5th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin quaternī set of four (see quatern adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix), after post-classical Latin trinitas trinity n. Compare earlier trinity n.
1. A group or set of four persons or things; esp. a group of four persons or aspects seen as comprising the Christian Godhead (in contrast to the three of the Trinity).
