Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Kwasi, Quassi.
Etymology: < the name of Kwasi (also spelt Quassi, Quacy, etc., in early sources: see Quashie n.), the African-born Surinamese slave who discovered the medicinal properties of the root in 1730. Compare later quassia n.Kwasi communicated his discovery to the Swedish botanist C. G. Dahlberg, by whom it was made known to Linnaeus. See further C. M. Blom in Linnaeus Amœnitates Academicæ (1763) VI. 420.
The wood or bark of the Suriname quassia tree, Quassia amara (cf. quassia n. 2a); the tree itself. Usually attributive.
