单词 beluga
释义

belugan.

Brit. /bᵻˈluːɡə/, /bɛˈlʊɡə/, U.S. /bəˈluɡə/
Inflections: Plural belugas, unchanged.
Forms: 1500s bellouga, 1600s–1800s belluga, 1600s– beluga, 1700s beluka, 1700s bolluga (irregular), 1800s belouga.
Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian běluga.
Etymology: < Old Russian běluga the great sturgeon (although this is first attested slightly later: 1599 or earlier), white whale (a1599 or earlier; Russian beluga ) < bělyj white + -uga suffix forming nouns. Compare later whitefish n. 2 and white whale n. (a) at white adj. and n. Compounds 1f.Earlier currency of the Old Russian word is implied by post-classical Latin beluga the great sturgeon (1526). Compare also Russian beluxa, now the usual word for the white whale (a1599 or earlier in Old Russian, perhaps with reference to the sturgeon; 18th cent. or earlier of the white whale), a parallel formation < the same adjective with a different suffix. Compare occasional attestations of the form belukha in English:1994 A. Fienup-Riordan Boundaries & Passages 111 People believed that belukha whales could transform themselves into wolves and attack unwary persons.
