Etymology: < French Quasimodo the Sunday following Easter Sunday (13th cent. in Old French; also in le jour de Quasimodo ) and its etymon post-classical Latin quasimodo the Sunday following Easter Sunday (12th cent. in a British source; more frequently as quasimodo geniti ) < quasi modo (in the phrase quasi modo geniti infantes ‘as if new-born babes’ (1 Peter 2:2 (Vetus Latina)); compare Vulgate: sicut modo geniti infantes ), the first words of the antiphon of the Latin introit of the Mass for this day ( < classical Latin quasi as if (see quasi adv.) + modō in manner, ablative of modus mode n.). Compare Spanish quasimodo (late 13th cent.), Middle Dutch, Dutch quasimodo, and also German Quasimodogeniti (early 16th cent. or earlier; 1407 or earlier in am suntag quasimodo geniti, literally ‘on the Sunday of Quasimodogeniti’), all denoting the Sunday following Easter Sunday.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Quasimodo.
Etymology: < Quasimodo, the name of the hunchback in Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) (usually translated as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame); the surfing position is so called on account of the hunched position adopted by the surfer.
Surfing.
A position in which the surfer rides hunched at the front of the board with head down, one arm forward and one arm back; a manoeuvre in which the surfer adopts this position.
