Also used as postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation. Abbreviated Pup (without point).The constellation was formed, together with Carina, Pyxis, and Vela, by the splitting of the former constellation Argo in the 19th cent. ΚΠ 1845 J. Herschel in Rep.
