Etymology: < puppet n. + -ry suffix. With sense 1 compare German Pupperei (16th cent.; now rare). Compare earlier poppetry adj. at poppet n. Derivatives.
1. Pretence, mimicry, masquerade; make-believe; artificial or unreal action; (spec. in early use) idolatrous or superstitious observances (cf. puppet n. 2a).
