Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin pūpilla , -ometer comb. form; pupil n.2, -ometer comb. form.
Etymology: Partly < classical Latin pūpilla pupil n.2 + -ometer comb. form, and partly < pupil n.2 + -ometer comb. form. Compare French pupillomètre (R. Houdin 1866, in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sci. 63 866).
A device or instrument for measuring the size of the pupil of the eye.

1864 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 27 Feb. 245/1 He [sc. Mr. Zachariah Laurence] also exhibited a Pupillometer or Coreometer, for measuring the size of the pupil.
1866 Chem. News 30 Nov. 260/1 The author [sc. R. Houdin] describes several instruments, which he calls respectively the pupilloscope, the pupillometer, the retinoscope, and the diopsimeter.
1885 Lancet 17 Jan. 112/1 The flat handle was utilised as a pupilometer and a measuring scale.
1920 Jrnl. Optical Soc. Amer. 4 77 Various pupilometers have been suggested and used for determining the size of the pupil.
1975 Sci. Amer. Nov. 110/2 We have also been using an electronic pupillometer that scans the eye and automatically measures the diameter of the pupil while the experiment is in progress.
2001 Daily Tel. 12 Jan. i. 28/7 Our clinic in Manchester and the one in Regent Street are the only ones in Britain to have a pupillometer.
