Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pupil n.1, -ar suffix1.
Etymology: < pupil n.1 + -ar suffix1, in sense 1 after classical Latin pūpillāris belonging to a pupil, orphan, or minor. With sense 2 compare later pupillarity n. 2. Compare pupillary adj.1 and the foreign-language forms cited at that entry.
Now rare.
