Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French pontil.
Etymology: Apparently < French pontil, although this is first attested later in this sense (see pontil n.). Compare slightly later puntilion n. and later pontil n., punto n.1 4.With sense 2 compare earlier punt n.3 2 and discussion at that entry.
