Etymology: < el Puntal, the name of a defensive fortification at the entrance to the harbour at Cadiz (compare Spanish el fuerte del Puntal the fort of El Puntal (1626)), probably < Spanish el , definite article + puntal point of land (1585 or earlier in this sense) < punta point (see point n.¹) + -al -al suffix¹.Compare the following earlier examples apparently showing Puntal as a place name in English contexts:1587 in Spanish War 1585–7 (Navy Records Soc.)
