Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Puntal.
Etymology: < el Puntal, the name of a defensive fortification at the entrance to the harbour at Cadiz (compare Spanish el fuerte del Puntal the fort of El Puntal (1626)), probably < Spanish el , definite article + puntal point of land (1585 or earlier in this sense) < punta point (see point n.1) + -al -al suffix1.Compare the following earlier examples apparently showing Puntal as a place name in English contexts:1587 in Spanish War 1585–7 (Navy Records Soc.) XI. 163 The White Lion being commanded..to ride as near to Puntales [MS. Pointall] as might be.?1626 Dick of Devonshire (1955) iv. iii. 68 Why did not yor great Navy, being in such bravery, as it took Puntall, seize Cales?
Now rare (historical in later use).
A defensive fortification at the entrance to the harbour at Cadiz (originally consisting of a blockhouse erected on a point of sand); a similar fortification elsewhere. Frequently in plural.
