Origin: Probably a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish punta.
Etymology: Probably < Central American Spanish punta, specific use of Spanish punta point (see point n.1), perhaps after a Garifuna word to which it bore a superficial resemblance.
A type of energetic Central American folk music of the Garifuna people of the mainland Caribbean; a dance performed to such music. punta rock: a musical style characterized by a blend of punta rhythms with rock guitar.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian punta.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian punta (although this is not recorded in dictionaries of Italian in this sense), specific use of punta point (see point n.1). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pu·nta) /ˈpunta/.
More fully punta straw. Straw made from the narrower upper part of the stalk, as grown in Tuscany and plaited for use in making hats, etc. Now rare.
