Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English pun , pound n.1, -et suffix1.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < pun, regional variant of pound n.1 + -et suffix1.An etymology < the name of a man with the surname Punnett (supposed inventor of the container) has also been suggested, although apparently no contemporary documentation is available. Compare the following:1967 F. A. E. Crew in Biogr. Mem. Fellows Royal Soc. 13 309 In the 18th century a member of the family [of Reginald Crundall Punnett (1875–1967), English geneticist], a grower of strawberries, among other things, invented and gave his name to the small chip basket in which he sent his produce from Bromley to the London market.
A small light shallow container (originally made from strips or chips of wood) used esp. for strawberries, raspberries, mushrooms, and similar produce. Formerly also †punnet basket. Also (occasionally): a pottle (pottle n.1 2).
