Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Punica , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Punica, genus name of the pomegranate ( Linnaeus Systema Naturae (1735); ultimately < classical Latin Pūnicum pomegranate (see Punic n.), after post-classical Latin malus punica pomegranate (1586 or earlier)) + -in suffix1. In sense 1 after French punicine (G. Righini 1844, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 5 298). In sense 2 after German Punicin (P. Karrer & R. Widmer 1927, in Helvetica chimica acta 10 77).In form punicine in sense 1 after the French form.
Chemistry. Now rare.
1. An alkaloid isolated from the root of the pomegranate tree, Punica granatum, found to be identical to pelletierine.

1977 Notes & Rec. Royal Soc. 31 285 He [sc. Schunck]..never realized that it contained bromine, and the identity of punicin as 6,6′ dibromo-indigo was not established until after his death.
