Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pungere.
Etymology: < classical Latin pungere to prick, puncture, (of insects) to sting, in post-classical Latin also to cause to smart (1608 in the passage translated in quot. 1657 at sense 2) < the same base as pugnus fist (see pugnacious adj.). Compare earlier ping v.1, punye v., poin v.
Obsolete. rare.
