Etymology: < classical Latin punctus, past participle of pungere punge v. Compare point n.1, punctum n. Compare also punctus elevatus n., punctus interrogativus n., and punctus versus n.
Palaeography.
In medieval (originally liturgical) manuscripts: a point used to indicate a short pause or minor break; also called punctum. Cf. punctus elevatus n., punctus versus n.Originally also used to indicate a longer break, when placed above the line.
