Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: punctuate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < punctuate v. (although this is first attested slightly later in the sense relevant to sense 1: see sense 2 at that entry) + -or suffix. Compare post-classical Latin punctuator person who marks absentees from divine office (in an undated text in Du Cange). With sense 1 compare later punctator n.
1. With reference to Semitic writing systems: a person who inserts points indicating vowel and accentuation signs; esp. a person who was the first to do this, as, in Hebrew, any of the Masoretes. Cf. punctator n.
