Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin punctus , verbatim adv., literatim adv.
Etymology: < classical Latin punctus (u -stem) action of pointing (see punctual adj.) + -atim (in verbatim adv. or literatim adv.). Compare post-classical Latin punctuatim with attention to punctuation (1352 in a British source). Compare punctatim adv. N.E.D. (1909) gives only the pronunciation (pɒŋktiuˌēi·tim) /pʌŋktjuːˈeɪtɪm/.
