Origin: Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin purpura , -ic suffix; purpura n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin purpura purple (see purpure n.) + -ic suffix. In sense 2 < purpura n. or its etymon post-classical Latin purpura + -ic suffix.
1. purpuric acid n. Chemistry an acid, known only in solution, which contains the purpurate anion (C8H4N5O6); the parent acid of purpurates.
