Etymology: Probably < classical Latin purpurāria purpurare n., with suffix substitution (compare -ess suffix1). Compare early modern German purpurin (1466 in a translation of the Bible with reference to St Lydia of Thyatira). Compare later purpurare n.
Obsolete.
A female seller or dyer of purple cloth; spec. St Lydia of Thyatira (cf. purple-seller n. at purple adj. and n. Compounds 2b).
