单词 belligerent
释义

belligerentadj.n.

/bɛˈlɪdʒərənt/
Forms: Also 1500s–1700s -gerant.
Etymology: The earlier belligerant (compare French belligérant ) was < Latin belligerānt-em , present participle of belligerāre to wage war: see belligerate v., belligerous adj. The current spelling, if due to imitation of Latin gerentem, is etymologically mistaken, since the word is not derived < gerĕre; but compare magnific-ent.
