Forms: 1800s poonatoo, 1800s– punatoo.
Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil paṉāṭṭu.
Etymology: Ultimately (probably via Sinhala) < Tamil paṉāṭṭu inspissated extract of palmyra fruit and sap < paṉai palm, especially palmyra.
In Sri Lanka: the edible pulp of the fruit of the palmyra palm pressed into cakes and dried.
