Etymology: < Punan Punan, self-designation. Compare:1993 V. T. King Peoples of Borneo 40 The etymology of the term ‘Punan’ is uncertain, but it would appear to be a native word meaning ‘to roam or wander in the forest’... Some other terms used by settled farmers to refer to nomads are ‘Penan’, which commonly covers those groups in Serawak speaking Kenyah-related dialects [etc.].
