Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pussy n., willow n.
Etymology: < pussy n. + willow n., so called on account of the resemblance of the soft, downy catkins to the fur of a cat. Compare pussy n. 5a, and also catkin n.
Originally U.S.
The soft, fluffy catkin of any of various species of willow (genus Salix), or such catkins collectively; any of the willows bearing such catkins, esp. (in North America) the glaucous willow, S. discolor, and (in Britain) the goat willow, S. caprea, and the grey sallow, S. cinerea. Also: a willow branch bearing such catkins, sometimes carried as a festive emblem.
