Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pusille; Latin pusillus.
Etymology: < Middle French pusille (1482), puzil (1507), pusil (1520) very small, weak, and its etymon classical Latin pusillus very small, insignificant, petty < pūsus boy ( < the same base as pūtus boy, child: see putto n.) + -illus (see -illa suffix). With use as noun compare classical Latin pusilla (feminine) very small person. Compare perpusil adj. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (piū·sil) /ˈpjuːsɪl/.
