Etymology: < pumice n. + -ite suffix1. Perhaps compare French pumicite pumice (1842; in geological and mineralogical use, as a technical synonym of pierre ponce : see pumice stone n.).
Geology.
A volcanic ash with a composition similar to pumice but deposited as powder or granules, widely used in the manufacture of lightweight concrete and for its abrasive properties; unconsolidated volcanic ash.

1916 E. H. Barbour in Nebraska Geol. Surv. IV. 358 Pumicite has been variously called geyserite, volcanic dust.., and the like... For all of these we have substituted the name pumicite, a self-explanatory term, which we have used for some years.
